Attorney General Pam Bondi has released a letter she wrote to FBI Director Kash Patel, claiming that the agency was withholding "thousands" of documents about late financier and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In the letter, Bondi wrote that she had received around "200 pages of documents" from the FBI related to Epstein, which included flight logs, his list of contacts and victims' names and contact details.
She wrote that while she was "repeatedly assured by the FBI" that she had received the full set of documents, she found out yesterday that the agency had thousands of pages of files in its possession.
"Late yesterday, I learned from a source that the FBI Field Office in New York was in possession of thousands of pages of documents related to the investigation and indictment of Epstein. Despite my repeated requests, the FBI never disclosed the existence of these files," Bondi wrote.
Bondi continued, saying that the FBI will deliver the "full and complete Epstein files" to her office by Friday morning.
She also directed Patel to conduct an immediate investigation into why her order to the FBI "was not followed," with a report of his findings to be delivered within two weeks.
On Thursday, binders that read "The Epstein Files" were distributed to several conservative political commentators at the White House.
Among those who received a binder was commentator Liz Wheeler, who posted a picture on social media showing her holding the binder, with a caption that said "I got a binder of Epstein files. Exclusive."
Epstein's crimes and connections to famous people have long been a subject of public fascination.
Over the years, thousands of pages of records have been released through lawsuits and Freedom of Information Act requests.
Epstein sexually abused children hundreds of times over more than a decade, exploiting girls as young as 14. He killed himself in 2019 while awaiting trial in a New York jail.
The case has drawn widespread attention because of Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell's links to royals, presidents and billionaires.
Maxwell, 62, was found guilty in 2021 of luring young girls to Epstein so he could molest them. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
