The silence of Voyager 1: What caused the communication blackout?
In November 2023, data transmissions to Earth by Voyager 1 no longer remained in readable format. The data, though capable of receiving, remained unintelligible to flight controllers. The root of the issue lies where the flight data subsystem (FDS) is, and is responsible for encapsulating data for engineering and science before sending. The problem arose through a glitch in one of its memory chips, where programming code is kept. The glitch rendered data useless, and NASA’s team found itself in an embarrassing position of having to diagnose 15 billion miles away.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) NASA team (more on the NASA team) dedicated an intense effort to recovering Voyager 1 communication, which had been missing for five months. A faulty Flight Data Subsystem (FDS) chip connected to 3% of the system’s memory unit. This led to the problem’s detection. The team constructed a different solution, which replaced chip replacement because Voyager 1 operated too far away for repairs.
The team separated the affected programming into smaller sections before moving them to various parts of the FDS memory system. The team needed complete knowledge of spacecraft systems to properly design a new memory organization system that would operate effectively. System transition became possible because the team modified programmable instructions for the new storage systems.

The data did verify, however, that, in fact, the tweak did take, and the spacecraft sent intelligible engineering reports.
