Why is there so much fuss about a phone call between Carney and Trump, during which Trump once again mentioned his favorite topic: Canada becoming the 51st state? Isn’t it more important to investigate the leak that allegedly harmed Carney just one week before the elections?
According to Radio Canada, two sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the issue of Canadian sovereignty was addressed in the initial part of the conversation. If the leak originated from the White House, its only purpose would have been to boost Poilievre's chances in the final week.
If someone from Carney's team leaked the details to Radio Canada, then Carney faces a much bigger issue than Trump's rants about Canada. He would have a mole in his organization, and he must identify that person. However, I doubt this is the case. I believe that Poilievre's allies in the White House leaked that information to undermine Carney's chances of winning big next Monday. This is typical behavior for Trump supporters.
Canadians, you need to wake up. Carney does not owe you any explanations regarding Trump’s favorite rant. During that week in March, Trump mentioned the 51st state every day. Carney had to find a way to calm him down and try to reason with him, which he did for the benefit of all. With tariffs looming over the auto industry, he chose not to escalate tensions. He could have taken a more controversial stance, which might have helped him at the polls, but he prioritized negotiations instead. This is how effective negotiators operate.
Now, a number of populist conservative journalists who somehow obtained secret information are trying to change the narrative to supposedly serve the truth. They should tell us what kind of investigative work they did to uncover this information, but they won’t. They are serving their preferred client, the White House, while posing as champions of journalism. In my view, they are pawns of American interests, playing their cards against Canada to please their puppet master.
But Carney will ultimately prevail. He has the trust of the overwhelming majority of Canadians, and these provocations by Trump-influenced agents will not harm him.
