Iran and Israel have launched a series of military attacks against each other, marking a significant increase in hostilities that have drawn international attention. The conflict has intensified over concerns related to Iran's nuclear program, with both nations exchanging strikes that have resulted in civilian casualties and heightened fears of a broader conflict.

On June 21, Israel targeted the city of Qom, near the Fordow nuclear plant, killing two civilians, including a 16-year-old boy. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) focused their assault on missile storage and launch facilities, highlighting their ongoing commitment to countering perceived threats from Iran. In the early morning hours, sirens alerted central Israel to incoming missile fire from Iran, forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter. Despite the alarm, the IDF later confirmed that all incoming rockets had been successfully intercepted.

On the same day, Israel reportedly struck Iran's Isfahan nuclear power plant, an action that has drawn condemnation and concern from international observers. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued warnings about the potential for attacks on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, particularly emphasizing the vulnerability of Iran's only commercial nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the killing of Saeed Izadi, a senior commander of the Quds Force, during an operation in Qom. Izadi was known for his role in financing and equipping Hamas, particularly following the group's recent attacks on Israel. Katz described the operation as a significant achievement for Israeli intelligence and military capabilities.

The Quds Force has established a network of regional allies known as the Axis of Resistance, which includes groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. However, this network has suffered considerable setbacks in the last two years due to intensified Israeli military actions following Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023. Katz highlighted the detrimental impact these Israeli operations have had on both Hamas and Hezbollah's operational capabilities.

As the conflict escalates, disputes over Iran's nuclear ambitions remain a central issue. Israel initiated its campaign against Iran on June 13, claiming that Iran was close to developing nuclear weapons. In contrast, Iran insists that its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, Israeli strikes have resulted in 639 fatalities in Iran, including high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists. In Israel, Iranian missile attacks have claimed the lives of 14 civilians, although independent verification of casualty figures remains challenging.

U.S. President Donald Trump has weighed in on the situation, asserting that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon "within weeks or certainly within months." He voiced his intention to prevent this outcome and expressed skepticism about the efficacy of diplomatic negotiations currently taking place in Geneva. Trump indicated that the U.S. might take a more active role in the conflict. However, he acknowledged the difficulty in pressuring Israel to limit its military actions while they are experiencing success.

Amidst these developments, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that there will be no negotiations with the U.S. until Israeli aggression ceases. Nevertheless, he traveled to Geneva for discussions with European foreign ministers, hoping to find a path back to diplomacy.

The Geneva talks have yet to yield significant progress, and Trump has expressed doubts about the ability of negotiators to secure a ceasefire. He emphasized that Iran prefers to negotiate with the U.S. rather than European powers, complicating the diplomatic landscape.

As the situation continues to evolve, both Russia and China have called for immediate de-escalation. At the same time, Iranian officials have indicated a willingness to discuss limits on uranium enrichment, albeit rejecting any proposals that would entirely prohibit it, especially under the current circumstances of Israeli military actions. The international community watches closely as tensions mount and the possibility of broader conflict looms.
