Israeli trade union leader rejects Netanyahu’s ‘super-Sparta’ vision

Following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comment that Israel may need to become a “super-Sparta” – in reference to growing isolation of Israel’s economy – one of the country’s leading trade unions has pushed back.
Arnon Bar-David, chairman of the Histadrut trade union, said, “I wish for our children to live in Athens, not Sparta.”
Ancient Athens knew “how to nurture culture, art, and the well-being of its citizens”, he added.
“Israeli society is exhausted,” and the country’s global standing is deteriorating, said Bar-David. “I hope to see the hostages return home soon and an end to the war.”

Israel opens route for 48 hours for those fleeing Gaza City

An Israeli army spokesperson has announced a “temporary” route for Palestinians to leave besieged Gaza City through Salah al-Din Street only for 48 hours.
In a post on X, Avichay Adraee said residents will be allowed to move through Salah al-Din Street and continue southwards from Wadi Gaza.
“Transit through this route will be available for 48 hours starting today … and until Friday,” he said.
Israel has repeatedly attacked residential areas, schools and hospitals in the Gaza Strip during its 23 months of genocidal war.

A dozen Palestinians killed in Gaza since dawn

Hospital sources in Gaza say at least 12 people have been killed across the Gaza Strip in the morning, including seven in Gaza City.
A child and his mother were among those killed in an attack on a residential apartment on Eidya Street in the Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City.
The Israeli army also destroyed at least 17 residential buildings in Gaza City as it ramps up its assault to capture and occupy the Palestinian territory’s main urban centre.
The army has kept up this pace of destruction for weeks now, leaving thousands homeless and forced to flee southwards.

Israeli army targets Deir el-Balah city

Israeli soldiers opened fire on eastern areas of Deir el-Balah city, in the central Gaza Strip, as artillery shelling targeted the same area, local residents say.
In the vicinity of Sheikh Radwan, northwest of Gaza City, Israeli forces detonated booby-trapped robots near buildings.
Israeli forces continue to carry out intense attacks in Gaza City, forcibly displacing tens of thousands of residents in order to seize and occupy the territory.
