A flash poll taken after President Trump’s record-long State of the Union address on Tuesday found that not many Americans are confident that he will lower costs.
CNN conducted the flash poll and found that 31 percent of respondents were confident Trump will make the cost of living more affordable, followed by 29 percent who have some confidence in the president. The poll also found that 40 percent have no confidence that Trump will lower costs.
A pre-speech survey found that most viewers wanted to hear the president talk about the cost of living and the state of the economy. CNN found that 45 percent of viewers said Trump focused too little on those issues, while 53 percent said he gave the right amount of time to addressing the cost of living and the economy.
After his speech, 62 percent of responents told CNN that Trump’s proposed policies for handling the economy will move the country in the right direction. This is compared to 38 percent who said his proposals will lead the country down the wrong direction.
Trump addressed the economy during the first half of his speech and made valid claims about the stock market. He also claimed that he inherited an economy with “inflation at record levels” despite the slight drop since his return to the White House last year
“They caused and created the increased prices that all of our citizens had to endure. You caused that problem. You caused that problem,” Trump said to Democrats in the chamber, criticizing them over affordability, an issue he’s previously deemed a “hoax.”
He also suggested that Congress should pass another tax cut to help taxpayers who are struggling amid a slow economy. Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis found that the economy grew at an annualized 1.4 percent rate.
The state of the economy remains a primary issue for voters going into the November midterm elections and the main drag on Trump’s polling. The president campaigned on lowering costs and tackling inflation, two issues that have become a political liability for Republicans.
Trump’s handling of the economy has faced growing criticism from voters, with recent polling from NPR/PBS News/Marist and Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos both showing that around 60 percent of voters are dissatisfied with the president’s handling of the economy.
The CNN survey was conducted Feb. 24 and included 482 respondents. The margin of error is 5.5 percentage points.
