UAE says it 'will not tolerate any threat to its security and sovereignty.'

The UAE said it “will not tolerate any threat to its security and sovereignty under any circumstances” and reserves its “full, sovereign, legitimate, diplomatic and military rights” to respond to any threats or hostile acts in accordance with international law, after a drone strike near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.

In a statement to The National, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked terrorist attack” against an electricity generator outside the plant’s inner perimeter in Al Dhafra region.

The ministry said the drone entered UAE airspace from the western border direction and caused no injuries or effect on radiation safety levels.

It described the attack as a “dangerous escalation,” an “unacceptable act of aggression,” and a direct threat to the country’s security.

The ministry said attacking a peaceful nuclear energy plant was a flagrant breach of international law, the UN Charter and humanitarian principles, warning of the risks that such attacks pose to civilians, the environment, and regional and international security.

It added that international standards and resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency stress the need to protect peaceful nuclear facilities from hostile acts or military threats.

The ministry also said attacks on civilian and vital infrastructure were unequivocally condemned under legal and humanitarian norms, calling for an immediate halt to such attacks and full compliance with the cessation of hostilities.

Iranians have been told to use less water and electricity as President Masoud Pezeshkian warns the country's difficult wartime conditions are set to continue.

With no US-Iran peace deal in sight, the conflict is weighing heavily on the Iranian economy thanks to rising prices, job losses and a prolonged internet blackout. While visiting a mosque in Tehran, Mr Pezeshkian said reducing consumption and changing the "behavioural pattern of society" was essential for Iran. He said religious leaders could play a part in promoting a "culture of thrift".

"The consumption rate in some areas is far beyond conventional standards, and even under normal circumstances, it was necessary to reform the consumption trend," he said. "Given the country's special conditions, this issue has become a vital and strategic necessity."

Mr Graham accused Iran of “playing games” and said it is stalling on making any deal or reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

“The status quo is hurting us all. The longer the [Strait of Hormuz] is closed, the more we try to pursue a deal that never happens, the stronger Iran gets,” he added.
