The suspected shooter has been identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, a Maryland resident, according to multiple sources.

Officials have not disclosed whether Best was from the D.C. area or what motivated the shooting. It remains unclear if the shooting was politically motivated or if President Donald Trump, who was in the White House at the time, was the intended target. Investigators will also need to determine if Best acted alone or had any accomplices.
The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the shooting around 6 p.m. near 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue. The confrontation prompted a brief lockdown inside the White House. Journalists present at the time shared videos showing Secret Service agents on the lawn immediately after the incident. Authorities have indicated that another person was struck by gunfire, but that individual’s name and condition have not been released.
