Los Angeles, CA - It may not have been the most exhilarating football game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but it nevertheless marked a significant moment in Canadian history! Canada, having already made waves by advancing past the group stage for the first time ever, pushed into uncharted territory by defeating South Africa 1-0 in this tense knockout round!
The breakthrough came in dramatic fashion, thanks to Stephen Eustaquio, who sent a stunning long-range volley into the net just moments into extra time, finally breaking the deadlock in Los Angeles.
Despite a scoreless first 90 minutes, both teams fought hard and were very careful in defence, trying not to concede a goal first. Canada took 12 shots during regulation but struggled to convert their opportunities into goals.
The tide changed thanks to the return of captain Alphonso Davies, who made his much-anticipated tournament debut as a substitute in the 74th minute. His presence re-energized the team, breathing new life into their offensive efforts.
With this monumental victory, Canada has secured a place in the Round of 16 for the first time in its history! They will now prepare for a challenging encounter against either the Netherlands or Morocco, who are set to face off on Monday.
What an amazing journey it has been for Canadian soccer!
