Here's the latest

New strikes: In one of the most serious exchanges since the ceasefire began, Iran fired missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain as the US conducted new strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island. Earlier in the day, the US military said it “disabled” an oil tanker heading for an Iranian port by striking it with a Hellfire missile.

• Status of negotiations: Iranian media outlets have signaled talks between Tehran and Washington are ongoing, a day after reports that Iran suspended them. But the country’s top negotiator threatened escalation if Israel’s attacks on Lebanon continue.

Israel-Lebanon talks: High-stakes talks between Israel and Lebanon have wrapped for the day and will continue tomorrow at the US State Department. The talks come after Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and the Israeli military traded strikes overnight.

• US-Israel tension: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the Israeli military would keep striking southern Lebanon “as planned,” hours after US President Donald Trump declared that Israeli forces would not move on Beirut. Sources say a call between the two leaders became heated.

Bahrain says it intercepted 3 Iranian missiles and multiple drones

By Jessie Yeung
Bahrain’s air defenses intercepted and destroyed three missiles and “a number of” drones on Wednesday, according to the country’s military, which condemned Iran’s attacks on the region.

Iran “continues its systematic hostile approach through its heinous attacks with missiles and drones targeting civilian objects in the Kingdom of Bahrain,” the military’s General Command said.

It added that “all its weapons and units are at the highest levels of readiness and defensive preparedness,” and warned civilians not to touch or approach any “strange or suspicious objects.”

Kuwait airport damaged in Iranian attacks, flights suspended

By Jessie Yeung
Kuwait’s international airport was damaged by Iranian missiles and drones early Wednesday, according to authorities.

The attack injured “a number of people,” who have received medical care, and caused damage to the airport’s Terminal 1, the state-run Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported, citing the defense ministry.

Flights and air traffic in Kuwait have been suspended in the wake of the attack, KUNA reported.

Terminal 1 –– the airport’s main hub for international flights –– had only reopened on Monday, according to local media reports, after being damaged in a previous Iranian attack in late February.

The US and Iran are exchanging biggest strikes in weeks as ceasefire hangs in balance

By Jessie Yeung
The US and Iran have traded strikes in one of the biggest nights of attacks since the ceasefire began in April, with negotiations on perilous ground after days of back-and-forth and rising frustrations on all sides.

Here’s what to know:

Tuesday night’s hostilities appear to have begun when the US military used a Hellfire missile to hit a Botswana-flagged oil tanker heading toward an Iranian port on Kharg Island. The ship did not comply with the US blockade of Iranian ports, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).

In response, Iran said it fired missiles at a Liberian-flagged vessel.

But the more serious escalation came after the US struck an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island, near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Iran to fire missiles and drones at the Gulf nations of Kuwait and Bahrain.

Iran said it targeted “an American air and helicopter base” in the region, as well as the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. But the US said “all Iranian attacks on American forces failed,” adding that its missiles and drones were either intercepted or “fell short” of their targets.

Strained talks: Iranian media outlets have signaled talks between Tehran and Washington are ongoing, and US President Donald Trump told ABC News he believes a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend the ceasefire with Iran is reachable “over the next week.”

But the ceasefire is on precarious footing, with Iran suspending talks earlier this week, and threatening escalation if Israel’s attacks on Lebanon continue. Trump has pressed Israel to scale back its Lebanon offensive, with further talks expected on Wednesday.

Shaky ceasefire: The US and Iran have repeatedly exchanged strikes during the ceasefire, with Iran previously targeting Gulf nations that host American military bases, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, the US has struck Iranian military targets around the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Iran-linked vessels as part of its blockade.

Another attempt by Iran to attack US forces stationed in Kuwait on Wednesday morning local time failed, according to the US military.

“An additional wave of Iranian drones attempting to attack US forces in Kuwait failed to impact intended targets tonight,” US Central Command said on X.

“No American personnel or assets were harmed,” it added.

The US military earlier rejected claims that Iran struck the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and a US air base in the region, saying “all Iranian attacks on American forces failed.”

Iran says it targeted US Fifth Fleet headquarters and airbase in response to US attacks

By Helen Regan
Iran said it targeted American bases in the region and a vessel near the Strait of Hormuz in response to what it said were US attacks on an Iran-linked oil tanker and strikes on Qeshm Island.

The US military has rejected Iran’s claim that it struck the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and a US air base in the region.

Iran’s revolutionary guards (IRGC) said they fired missiles at a vessel, identified as the Liberian-flagged Panaya, in response to the US striking an oil tanker heading toward Iran’s key oil port at Kharg Island, Iranian state media IRIB reported.

The IRGC said the US targeted a military “communications tower in southern Qeshm Island,” which is considered part of Iran’s “arch defense” near the Strait of Hormuz. The US military earlier said it had struck an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island in “self-defense.”

Retaliatory missile and drone attacks were launched by Iran on “an American air and helicopter base” as well as the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet,” the IRGC said. US and Bahraini air defenses intercepted three missiles fired at Bahrain, US Central Command said earlier, adding that missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart en route.

The IRGC has warned that “any further aggression would be met with a different and more severe response.”

US carries out “self-defense” strikes after Iranian missile and drone attacks, CENTCOM says

By Clay Voytek and Hira Humayun
The US military conducted “self-defense” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island, US Central Command said today.

CENTCOM said the strikes were in response to “attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East.”

“Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors; however, all failed to hit their intended targets. Two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart enroute, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were immediately intercepted by U.S. and Bahrain air defense forces,” CENTCOM said on X.

The US struck an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island, according to CENTCOM, and no US personnel were harmed.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, meanwhile, said its attacks on Kuwait were in response to the “brazen and blatant aggression” by US forces on Qeshm Island. The IRGC claimed it fired at least 10 ballistic missiles at Kuwait.

It added that the attacks are an “initial response,” warning of a much stronger retaliatory strike to come.

Sirens in Bahrain after Iran claims missiles struck in Kuwait

By Eyad Kourdi and Hira Humayun
Sirens sounded in Bahrain in the early hours of Wednesday, as the country’s Interior Ministry called on citizens to “remain calm” and seek shelter at the nearest safe place.

Shortly before the ministry’s announcement, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed three missiles had hit “enemy bases” in Kuwait, while Kuwait’s army said it was intercepting “enemy” missile and drone attacks.

Iran’s state broadcaster later claimed that Iranian forces had targeted two air bases used by US forces in Kuwait. CNN has reached out to US Central Command for comment.

The State Department said Tuesday that “progress continues on the political and security tracks” in US-mediated talks between Israel and Iran in Washington, DC.

Talks will continue tomorrow, the agency said.

“Progress continues on the political and security tracks as we break from the failures of the past 20 years and advance toward a comprehensive agreement aimed at restoring Lebanon’s sovereignty and ensuring Israel’s security,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said on social media.

The announcement came hours after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran is trying to “stymie” diplomatic efforts between the two countries.

Kuwait's army says it's intercepting missile and drone attacks

By Eyad Kourdi
Kuwait’s air defenses are intercepting “hostile missile and enemy drone attacks,” the country’s army said in the early hours of Wednesday.

“The General Staff of the Army notes that any sounds of explosions, if heard, are the result of air defense systems intercepting the hostile attacks,” the army said.

“Everyone is asked to adhere to the security and safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities,” it added.

It did not say where the attacks originated but a Telegram account affiliated to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that “according to published footage and reports coming out of Kuwait” three missiles had “successfully struck enemy bases in Kuwait.”

It called Kuwaiti statements about interceptions “ridiculous and laughable” and “on par with the usual claims issued by these proxy and collaborator regimes.”

The attack comes soon after Kuwait reported on Monday that it had repelled done and missile attacks, with US Central Command then saying it had “successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting American forces based in Kuwait.” CENTCOM added that no American personnel were harmed.

The latest attack, in the early hours of Wednesday, local time, comes shortly after Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported “explosion-like sounds” in the vicinity of the Iranian island of Qeshm.
