A “despicable act of terror.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has condemned a deadly attack on mourners attending a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, southern Jordan, describing it as a “despicable act of terror.” The October 23 attack killed at least seven people and wounded dozens more, according to reports from the Associated Press. The assailants opened fire as people gathered to mourn a loved one, turning a moment of grief into a scene of violence.

“This attack violated the sanctity of a place of worship and struck families at a moment of profound sorrow,” Carney said, extending his condolences to the families of those killed, the injured, the Greek Orthodox community and everyone grieving the loss. Canada condemned the violence in the strongest possible terms.

The attack has shocked Jordan and drawn international condemnation. Jordanian authorities have described the shooting as a terrorist attack and launched an investigation to identify those responsible. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem also condemned the violence, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.

A church should be a sanctuary, and a funeral should be a place where the living can mourn their dead in peace. To attack people gathered in grief is to violate not only the sanctity of a religious place but the most basic principles of human dignity. The victims and their families deserve justice, and the Greek Orthodox community in Jordan deserves the assurance that its right to worship and live in safety will be protected.
