No one should underestimate us, says China to Joe Biden

China's strong reaction was provoked by Joe Biden's statements from Tokyo that the United States will militarily defend Taiwan.

Beijing today called on the US president not to "underestimate" her "strong determination" to "protect its sovereignty".

"No one should underestimate the strong determination, strong will, and strong ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

"We strongly urge the United States (…) to refrain from sending false messages to the separatist forces in Taiwan," he added.

For its part, the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry thanked the United States "for reaffirming its commitment to Taiwan," adding that the island's government will continue to strengthen its defense and deepen its cooperation with countries such as the United States, and Japan to protect its security.
