The city of Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine has fallen into Russian hands as the Russian army is determined to take control of the Donbas region. It is noted that Severodonetsk is a key city and the last stronghold of the entire eastern industrial zone of Donbas.
Chechen leader Kadyrov said today that all residential areas were under Russian control and that fighting was taking place only in the western part of the city, which is the industrial zone.
"Most of Severodonetsk is now under the control of the Russian army," Luhansk provincial governor Serhiy Gaidai said in a statement, effectively confirming Russia's advance.
"Unfortunately, today, Russian troops control most of the city, but they have not surrounded it," Gaidai added. "90% of Severodonetsk has been destroyed", he said, adding that "due to the bombings it was impossible to distribute humanitarian aid or evacuate civilians, so there is no possibility for them to leave Severodonetsk because the evacuation is very dangerous due to the ongoing clashes."
"All the critical infrastructure has been completely destroyed" while "60% of the houses are impossible to restore", he estimated, reiterating that the city no longer has water, electricity, or gas. He added that battles are being fought "in the heart of the city".
Gaidai appealed to residents not to leave the shelters and have their gas masks ready, as a huge tank containing nitric acid was hit by a Russian bombardment. This chemical can cause serious lung damage, blindness, or even death.
For their part, pro-Russian separatists claimed that the nitric acid tank "exploded" at the chemical plant Nitrogen. "The area around the plant is still controlled by units of the Ukrainian regime," Radion Mirosnik, a spokesman for Russia 's separatist province of Luhansk, told the Telegram.
