If there is one thing that I picked out of Mark Carney's visit to the White House, it was that apart from the niceties between the PM and the POTUS nothing was achieved in terms of trade and the main reason is Trump's unwillingness to forget his plans about annexing our country, and stealing our wealth.
If Trump had the intention to make a deal with Canada, he would have done so. Instead, a day after Carney's visit, he gave to the British what he should have given us; not only did he cut tariffs on U.K. cars from 27.5% to 10%, but he also eliminated tariffs on steel and aluminum.
We should take this action quite seriously. And we should act cleverly. For example, we could forward our steel and aluminum to the Brits and let them sell it to the Yankees without tariffs. Just saying...
Or diversify our trade routes to the European Union, immediately, and maybe the Asian world as well; we cannot depend on a President who is extremely hostile to our interests and does not care about our opinions.
Nonetheless, Carney knows what needs to be done. He has foretold us during his campaign what needs to be done, and he should act swiftly, eliminate the tariffs between the provinces and territories. Also, he must decide what to do with the pipelines, consult all the premiers, and make up his mind.
In terms of Trump, we can wait. But do not fall into his trap. It will take patience and time. We hold all the cards in our hands. We can be polite but not docile.
