On Sunday, December 14, at around 3:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was called to a home to provide medical aid. Upon arrival, they found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead. Sources have confirmed that the victims were Rob and Michele.
Police report that Nick, 32, is alive and currently being questioned.
In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Nick discussed his long struggle with drug addiction, which began in his early teens and eventually led him to live on the streets. He mentioned that he cycled in and out of rehab starting around the age of 15. As his addiction worsened, he drifted farther from home and spent considerable time homeless in multiple states.
Nick told PEOPLE that the chaotic period of his addiction—during which he sometimes spent nights and weeks sleeping outside—inspired the semi-autobiographical film *Being Charlie*, which he co-wrote.
“Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family,” Nick shared with PEOPLE. at the time.
