The Russian Ministry of Defense stated today that it hopes the administration of US President Donald Trump will not make a fatal mistake regarding Venezuela and that Moscow is concerned about US decisions that threaten global navigation.
On Tuesday, Trump ordered a "blockade" of all sanctioned oil tankers going to or leaving Venezuela, as Washington tries to increase pressure on Nicolás Maduro's government.
An embargo has already been in effect since the US seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela last week, which was carrying millions of barrels of crude.
"We hope that Donald Trump's administration, characterized by a logical and realistic approach, will not make a fatal mistake," the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized in a statement.
The ministry stated that Venezuela is a country friendly to Russia and that Moscow hopes the US will not get involved in a situation with "unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere."
Russia invoked Simón Bolívar, the Venezuelan military leader who liberated much of South America from centuries of Spanish rule and had said that every state has the right to choose its own leaders and that other countries must respect this.
The ministry stated that Russia desires a normalization of dialogue between Washington and Caracas and reaffirmed Russia's solidarity "with the people of Venezuela in the face of the trials they are undergoing."
Russia supports the "course of the Maduro government, which aims to protect national interests and the sovereignty of the homeland."
THE KREMLIN CALLS FOR RESTRAINT
The Kremlin today called on countries in the region to show restraint regarding Venezuela to avoid what it called unpredictable events and characterized the escalation of tensions as "potentially very dangerous."
In recent weeks, the US has increased pressure on Nicolás Maduro's government, whom Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov referred to as an ally and partner of Russia.
