Iran has agreed to relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium as part of a deal with the United States to end the ongoing war, two U.S. officials inform the New York Times.

According to the officials, Iran has made a general commitment to give up the uranium, but they have not finalized the specifics on how this will be accomplished. The exact details will be negotiated once a formal agreement is reached.

This report follows claims from Iranian sources that the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued a directive stipulating that the near-weapons-grade uranium should not be sent abroad.

Iran currently possesses over 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, which Israeli officials have indicated is enough for the production of 11 nuclear bombs if enriched further. Earlier this month, a senior Israeli military official remarked that if this uranium is not removed, the war initiated in February could be deemed “one big failure.”
