According to a recent article in Wired, Meta has begun implementing advanced robotics in its data centers to automate various routine maintenance tasks
The tech giant is experimenting with robots designed to perform duties such as cable swapping, rebooting frozen servers, and reseating hardware components. This initiative is part of Meta's strategy to enhance physical operations across its global network, particularly as it speeds up efforts to bolster its computing capabilities for artificial intelligence applications. However, insiders warn that the automation of these tasks may threaten the jobs of technicians, potentially eliminating up to 80% of their responsibilities.
Traditionally, data center maintenance has relied on skilled technicians who manage physical issues, such as unplugging cables or rebooting servers when problems arise. Meta's goal is to transform this manual process into a more efficient, automated system. They are currently piloting robotics solutions from companies like Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB.
This shift towards automation is causing anxiety among current employees. Many technicians are expressing their fears in internal discussions that their jobs related to routine maintenance could be at risk in the near future. Meanwhile, Meta is also developing internal AI tools aimed at helping less experienced workers navigate complex tasks. Staff are concerned that this might lead to a preference for hiring lower-paid "smart hands"—entry-level workers who follow AI-generated instructions, rather than investing in experienced technicians who can troubleshoot issues.
While Meta has not officially commented on these ongoing initiatives, sources within the company have indicated that the ultimate aim is to achieve a level of automation in physical infrastructure management similar to that of its software operations.
