FBI Pins Hopes on Bitcoin Tracing as Sheriff Nanos Latest Mishap Casts More Doubts on Nancy Guthrie's Fate

As the FBI Pins its Hopes on Bitcoin Tracing in the Nancy Guthrie Abduction Case, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing scrutiny for an older incident that, according to his critics, adds another level of uncertainty in his ability to solve the case

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, remains missing after her abduction from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1. As the investigation continues, FBI experts are focusing on tracing Bitcoin ransom payments as their "best lead" in solving the case.

In a recent episode of Crime Stories with Nancy Grace, cybersecurity expert Ari Redbord discussed the significance of cryptocurrency in criminal investigations. Redbord, who is the global head of policy at TRM Labs, highlighted that contrary to popular belief, Bitcoin transactions can be traced on public blockchains. This capability allows law enforcement to track the flow of funds associated with cryptocurrency addresses linked to known criminal activities.

Grace noted that while video footage from “porch guy” and other cars in the neighborhood during the early hours of February 1 could provide crucial evidence, the ransom notes received by Savannah and her siblings are also key components of the investigation. Redbord affirmed that any cryptocurrency address involved in a case provides an immediate lead, saying, “Every transaction is traceable, trackable, and immutable. In other words, crypto is the ultimate crime scene.”

Using advanced blockchain analysis tools, investigators can look back in time to examine transactions connected to the Bitcoin address and link them to suspected threat actors, including those involved in ransomware and financial crimes. Redbord emphasized that unique cryptocurrency addresses allow authorities to build a case that could eventually lead to the identification and prosecution of perpetrators.

Despite multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI, working tirelessly on the case, no suspects have been named. Savannah has even offered a substantial $1 million reward for information that could lead to her mother’s safe return.

Adding to the complexity of the investigation, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing scrutiny for a separate incident where he allegedly brought a loaded gun to a TSA checkpoint in November 2024. This incident has fueled criticism regarding his handling of the Guthrie case.

As the search for Nancy continues to garner national attention, the timeline remains crucial, with her last known sightings occurring on the evening of January 31. The case remains unsolved, leaving many to wonder what might finally crack the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
