China has reportedly asked Iran to help subdue Yemen's Houthis after Saudi Arabia appealed to Beijing as the Iran-backed group launched a military attack in the past week.
The Houthis advanced along the Red Sea coast and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which has left Saudi's oil exports and shipping exposed, Reuters reported, citing three Iranian sources familiar with the matter.
Several media reports stated that earlier in the week, Riyadh had also shot down a Houthi drone near Mecca, which is Islam's holiest city. This was, however, strongly denied by the rebel group.
China has, in public, called for restraint, talks, and the resumption of safe passage, but its private message was more in-depth, the report said, citing three Iranian sources familiar with the matter.
The report further stated that Tehran responded by saying that peace and stability in the region depended on the end of the U.S.-Israeli-Iran conflict.
China wants Iran to use its influence with the rebel group to stop the attacks from spreading, as Saudi Arabia is home to many key energy routes.
