By law, no country can own the Moon. So they're claiming it another way.
A US-led bloc of 67 nations and a rival China-Russia bloc are racing for the same handful of spots at the lunar south pole, the only places with both sunlight to power a base and ice to make water and rocket fuel. They can't own the land, so they pass laws to own whatever they mine, and draw "safety zones" that work as keep-out fences around wherever they land. The Apollo flags have already bleached blank white. The next ones won't be symbols.
