First they stormed Manhattan; now they want Berlin

The Left has learned that slogans alone don't win elections or build mass movements. Its new weapon is simpler — and harder to ignore: organization as a method. And in classic internationalist fashion, that method has crossed borders and found its echo in Berlin, where another ideological battle is taking shape.
Something is happening on the political left that is larger than Zohran Mamdani, larger than New York and, increasingly, larger than the United States. A campaign method is traveling. It begins with an old idea — knock on the door, talk to the voter, listen to the grievance, organize the neighborhood — but it is being rebuilt for the age of social media, political polarization and the cost-of-living crisis. The most visible American precursor was Bernie Sanders, whose presidential campaigns helped turn democratic socialism from a marginal American political tradition into a mass electoral movement. In 2020, Democratic Socialists of America said its volunteers had knocked on more than 500,000 doors for Sanders in working-class and multiracial communities.
