I was looking for a Democratic Socialist candidate in Iowa, but I could not find one. Iowa has shifted from a moderate swing state into a reliably conservative Republican stronghold, which explains why Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates do not run statewide there. What I found was a Christian fellow who goes by the name of Rob Sand and is considered the best Democratic hope to flip the State.
Historically, Iowa was known for practical, independent-minded politics; is rugged individualism why the DSA has failed to produce a candidate there? Not only. Over the past decade, Republicans achieved a "trifecta" by winning control of the governorship and both chambers of the state legislature. The state's large rural populations, agricultural economy, and strong presence of socially conservative Christian voters have made it very difficult for progressive or democratic socialist platforms to find a broad audience outside of a few college towns.
Breaking the Trump Spell
Donald Trump has garnered support in Iowa primarily due to his economic and agricultural policies that resonate with local business interests. His key actions include expanding biofuel and ethanol production, crucial for Iowa's corn industry, which has been positive for some farmers despite controversies over small refinery waivers. His aggressive trade policies, although controversial, led to substantial federal farm aid packages that helped many farmers during trade disputes, particularly with China.
Additionally, Trump's deregulation efforts and tax cuts aimed at easing the business climate have been appealing, especially for agricultural businesses. He has positioned these policies as beneficial for the average Iowa family, despite criticisms that they favor larger corporate entities and create pollution. Finally, his education flexibility initiatives provide local communities more control over federal funds, aligning with conservative values in education. Overall, his policies have created a blend of support among those who value economic relief and agricultural growth, despite mixed reactions from the broader population.
To win in this political climate, you need a "different" candidate, and Rob Sand openly embraces all the elements that can make him beat the Republicans.
To begin with, he embraces his Christian faith with a highly collaborative approach when he speaks to his fellow Iowans. Rather than shying away from religion, Rob Sand is a practicing Lutheran who weaves the Bible directly into his campaign. He regularly uses his faith to connect with moderate and independent Iowans, and he constantly references Jesus clearing the money changers out of the Temple, telling voters that his job as State Auditor is to "flip the tables" on government corruption and elite insiders.
He is also defending the "Little Guy", as he publicly argues that his Christian faith is the exact reason he is a Democrat, stating that scripture teaches followers to protect and look out for the vulnerable.
He adopts a bipartisan approach—yes, you read that correctly—modeled after the Sermon on the Mount. Upon taking office as State Auditor, he purposefully assembled a leadership team that included a Democrat, an Independent, and a Republican, despite the fact that two of them had previously contributed to his political opponent's campaign. He is a pragmatist; he aims to represent a wide range of voices, so he is running as a Moderate Populist, acknowledging that Republicans outnumber Democrats in the state. Politically speaking, this strategy is quite clever.
Because of this, his campaign explicitly rejects partisan warfare; he heavily focuses on practical "good government" issues like fiscal oversight, government transparency, and revitalizing rural public schools. He famously pitches his campaign to voters by comparing politics to farming, arguing that Iowa needs a "crop rotation" for its politicians to keep the government from spoiling.
Clean Water Platform
Rob Sand has made water quality and clean water a central pillar of his 2026 campaign for Iowa Governor.
Iowa is currently facing severe environmental concerns over high nitrate levels in its water supply, which many residents and health advocates link to the state’s exceptionally high cancer rates, and Sand has turned this issue into a primary campaign platform, introducing specific policy proposals tailored to appeal to both environmentalists and Iowa’s massive farming community.
His clean water platform focuses heavily on specific, collaborative strategies, like the "Truer Better Agenda", a formalized health and environmental plan specifically targeting water quality and public health.
He is also incentivizing farmers instead of punishing them. By recognizing Iowa’s conservative agricultural base, Sand’s plan focuses on state income tax credits and property tax credits for farmers who adopt approved nutrient-management and soil conservation practices.
He is calling on the state legislature to finally fund a bipartisan water-quality public infrastructure project, passed by Iowa voters back in 2010 but left starved of cash by politicians.
Also, Sand advocates for the massive restoration of native Iowa wetlands, which act as a natural filtration system to absorb farm runoff before it enters the drinking water supply. He has heavily criticized current Republican state leaders for defunding vital water quality monitoring programs.
By framing clean water as a non-partisan issue of health, safety, and protecting the "little guy," Sand uses the topic to hold town halls across all 99 Iowa counties to win over rural, independent, and moderate voters.
And this is why this guy runs for Governor uncontested by his fellow Democrats.
